Adoptable Bernese Mountain Dogs

Please click on a thumbnail and view a full size picture along with a brief description of temperament and personality.  Although safe, these dogs may be undergoing medical treatment, temperament testing, and/or foster placement for socialization.  If you are interested in one of our special babies, we ask that you read the FAQ's document and then complete the adoption application.  Questions and applications can be sent to our Board Member, Linda Palma.    We have a high volume of applications to review and are very serious about where our rescues are placed, so please allow at least two weeks for our committee members to review the application.

Prior to placement all BARC dogs are:  spayed or neutered; microchipped;
checked for heartworms and parasites and treated if necessary; brought
up-to-date on all vaccinations, in some cases boosters may be necessary;
and are on heartworm and flea/tick preventives.  In the event that a
puppy is too young or a dog too ill to be spayed or neutered prior to
placement, the contract will require the adopter to spay/neuter the dog within a reasonable timeframe.

SPONSORSHIPS

Our dogs face many battles each and every day.  Some have disease and illness to overcome, some have extreme anxiety around people, and some simply need time to blossom.  Would you like to help one of our BARC babies during their journey?  We now have a way to do that.  You can sponsor a specific rescue to ensure that they have all the tools necessary to feel safe and secure.  When you donate,  you can tell us who you would like to sponsor and if there is something specific you would like us to purchase or do (food, a bed, a toy for example)

Is the back end of your car in need of a makeover, why not support your favorite rescue group !!! One decal is $10 and three are $25. Directions for purchase are coming soon.
The Perfect Bernese Mountain Dog

Are You Looking for the Perfect Dog?

Well, look no further.  This Bernese Mountain Dog does not shed, does not bark, does not drool, is housebroken, does not need a fenced yard, does not need to be walked, does not need to be fed and watered, does not require expensive medical care, does not dig, needs no training and can be left alone for hours on end.  Guaranteed.  Ok, so this is a little joke.  Of course you don't get the Berner kisses, the Berner handshakes, the Berner smiles, those Berner eyes, a big fuzzy foot warmer in the winter or all of the love your heart can hold.  Please remember, dogs are not perfect, just like humans.  With each accomplishment and every milestone conquered, you and your rescue Berner will become closer and your bond deeper.  Guaranteed.

Transportation Options

Because our BARC babies are adopted to families throughout the United States (and sometimes abroad), getting your new Bernese Mountain Dog home is very important.  We have three options that are available to you as a new BARC family.

1.  The safest and therefore the best option is coming to get your BARC baby.  Each rescue is located in a foster home.  When finalizing the adoption process,  you can make arrangements with the foster family as to where to pick up your new baby.

2.  We have a "Transport Train" available for our BARC families.  We have volunteers across the country who have volunteered their time to help drive our babies to their forever homes.  This is a huge committment for our volunteers and we can't tell you how important they are.  Because of the time committment and gas prices, we are having a difficult time finding enough volunteers.  If this option is used, expenses will have to be added to the adoption price.
3.  We also fly dogs out of the closest airport to the foster home.  We most commonly use Delta airlines.  They have a wonderful safety record and have proven to be extremely reliable.  The average price for flying a BARC dog is $250.  Of course, that price may vary due to the size and weight of your new dog.  Although BARC Board members can help, the new family is expected to make arrangements for any flight.

BARC, Inc. places its rescues for adoption under the following guidelines:

All applicants to adopt will be carefully screened.

All applicants to adopt must fill in an Application to Adopt, available above or by email.

Applications to adopt will be reviewed by our adoption committee and references will be checked.

BARC, Inc. reserves the right to refuse any application without providing reason for the refusal to the applicant.

Applicants to adopt must agree to enter into and abide by the terms of BARC, Inc.'s adoption contract.

BARC, Inc.'s rescues will be spayed or neutered prior to placement.  Where a potential adoptee is too young or too ill to undergo surgery while in BARC's custody, the adoption contract requires tha tthe dog be spayed or neutered by the adopter and proof of such neuter/spay be provided to BARC, Inc.

BARC, Inc. will make no warranty and offers no guarantee as to any adoptive animal's long term health status, pedigree, soundness or stability of temperament.  BARC, Inc. assesses the temperament and health of each dog in our care.  BARC, Inc. will address such issues in reviewing and approving applications to adopt and will make the knowledge gained available to approved applicants for adoption.  BARC, Inc. will act as advisor to approved adopters throughout the lifetime of the adopted animal.

There is an adoption fee which is based on our per dog expense.  The adoption fees are currently ranging between $650 to $1000.

Our Adoption Fee:

We know that our adoption fee sounds high to many of our supporters.  We arrive at that amount by factoring in a number of considerations.:

1.  The Cost of Rescue

The cost of purchasing, transporting, fostering, rehabilitating and providing medical care to our rescues is very high.  Because of the generous support of the global Berner community, we have been able to carry out our work in spite of the financial burden.  The adoption fee goes directly to the care of our rescues and to new rescue activities.  Most of the adoption fee received allow us to provide life-preserving veterinary care to our rescues.

2.  The Going Rate for a Purebred Bernese Mountain Dog

A recent survey of Berner owners indicated that most purebred Bernese Mountain Dog puppies from conscientious breeders in the United States cost between $1000 to $2500.

3.  The True Value of our Rescues

Most importantly, our rescues should be considered priceless additions to the Berner "family".  BARC does not exist to provide cheap or bargain puppies to owners unable to pay the going rate!  We love and value each of our rescues for the Berners they are and we will do everything we can to ensure that their new families feel the same way.
